Blue Staghorn Acropora

So, about three weeks ago I got a BN, a digita. The person gave me this 2" blue Staghorn acropora as a freebie. Well it has been slowly receding at the base and I'd like any info that is out there, along w/ experience and ideas on how to approach this. I'll get a pic when I turn my lights on, 11am, but I was thinking to cut it at the base right above the recession, and re glue then place in another spot. It is about midway in the tank now. More light or less? Also I will run water tests and post those up, but all other acros are doing really well and most of what I've read on the staghorns suggest they are hardier than the rest the acors?

Cutting it might help but IMO it would be better if you could dip the coral in something like revive or coral rx

often PH swings, temperature swings, or ALK swing will cause STN from the base of the coral -
How is your tank testing out?? I'd recommend testing it first thing in the AM, as well as at the end of the day to get a good perspective of how your tank is swinging from night to day.

Both of those dips should be fine. SPS will STN or RTN for almost no reason at times. Fragging them, moving, changing light, flow could all cause this.
Something else people do to stop this is to cover the receiding flesh with superglue |

KH-ALK reads 7 I'm taking in a sample to be tested for PH and my water source read a ammonia reading of 0.25 salt and fresh so I'm getting a RO unit Mon. Went to turn my lights on and another acro frag was white to the tip almost, no idea whats going on but it can't be good.

Doing that as we speak, but that has been 7 forever. It was 6 last week and that is why I started to raise it. 6 is just too low. I've that sea water is about a 7 so for months now I've left it there. Never had any pros till now. I have some 1 helping me w/ RO water til Mon. when my unit gets here, so I'll do another WC Sun. and see if that helps.

Okay so my Alk has been about 7 since I started vodka dosing about 8 month ago. I spent a lot of time researching dumping vodka in my tank before I did it and was very careful. I've been thinking about doing it again, but I'd like to see my Alk a little higher. I'm using the Kent buffer to raise the Alk, because I never felt my system was big enough to use a 2 part dosser. Cal if always fine. What product do you geeks recommend to raise the Alk, and is there a way to vodka dose and keep the Alk at say around 9?
Oh sps have stopped going down hill since I got the RO/DI unit and have since done 2 WC. Everything looks a lot better, but like any failure in the tank it has me trying to improve. I currently have hair and bubble algae. |

i've never dosed vodka, but I use plain ol baking soda to adjust my ALK when it gets low.
I've got a CA reactor, so things are pretty stable, just need a pick me up here and there when things go nutz. I also use brightwell CA for and CA top-off that may be needed. Before the CA reactor tho, I used to use kalkwasser as my top-off water, that worked great at keeping my ALK up! (kalkwasser AKA mrs wages pickling lime mixed in until the remainder settles, then pour the "limewater" in)

You want to make sure that you don't get too much of the pickling lime "dust" in your tank - so, you mix in a couple tablespoons (how much doesn't really matter), stir up the water, and then let it sit until all the dust settles on the bottom.
I like to use a clear juice jug that has the little spout near the bottom - I mix the water up, let the dust settle, and then use the spout to pour the "clear limewater" into my tank without stirring up the dust again. Then re-fill and repeat
