I have been wanting to get some SPS corals and have not for this particular reason. I have heard from a lot of folks that you cannot mix SPS/LPS in a tank do to the chemical warfare they cause. Does anyone have any info on this? Does anyone have both in a tank and can share what they do to have them co-exist in the same environment?

Its only chemical war fair if there close. Depends on what kind of LPS some are worse then others. I have a REAL nast LOBO puts it's stomach out and kills any pally near it.

if you have 500 LPS corals, and 1 SPS, you may see the effects of chemical warfare

really, it happens in every tank, but we all keep such a variety of corals none are affected to a point that they die.

I say, give it a shot - just try to do it one coral at a time and make sure they dont touch, that results in another kinda warfare

Our tanks have always been mixed with sps, lps and softies. As long as nothing can touch you should be fine. Also running a little carbon will remove and chems they add to the water. I say go for it.

The real reason people "say" you can't do LPS and SPS in the same tank is because of water parameters. LPS prefer dirtier water, and do well with some nitrates in the tank, whereas SPS like pristinely clean water and don't want any nitrates in the tank.

Many of us, myself included, have successfully kept a mixed reef for many years. Carbon to keep chemical warfare down to a minimum, distance for the same reason (and to add growing room), and good attention to water quality and making sure it's at a happy medium for both will do you well.
