Low light corals

Is back with a vengeance!
Default Low light corals

Hey guys recently I have gotten the coral bug and decided to add some coral to my tank. one catch my tank is designed as a FOWLR. All my fish are reef safe but my lights aren't reef standard. the're 120 watts all together and my tank is 72 gallons. I have been able to maintain 2 separate frags of Zoas in my tank but now I want to broaden my horizons. are there any other corals that can survive in my tank.
I was also looking at adding a frag of these two zoas

Zoa do fine in lower light. You posted the same link twice but i doubt it will make a difference.

What type of bulbs do you have? Are they PC, VHO, T5's or what? There are lots of LPS that you can work with.

they are VHO. this is the other link I meant to post. Farmed Evil Greens Zoanthid - SaltCritters. anyway I was thinking I want to get a really big(like 6")mushroom for one corner of the tank. I also was hoping to get some favia.

Not sure if favia can do it. Most zoas, mushrooms and bubble/torch coral can handle it. Keep in mind that any corals you get will probably lose much of their vibrance under low light because they produce more zooxanthellae to compensate for the lack of light, which obscure the coral's pigment. It's known as browning out. Doesn't mean the coral is sick, just think of it as a reverse tan.

I have zoanthids and mushrooms that I've had since I had PC lights. I know they do well. Not sure on the favia. I like them too.

well that's disappointing! oh well I'm gonna do it anyway. I was talking to salty from salt critters and he said I might be able to do favia thats why I brought it up. Oh dude I can do bubble and torch coral!!! THATS AWESOME!

I've kept one favia colony under PC, it never really grew though, but it stayed alive and healthy!

VHO's can grow a lot of stuff. Just make sure you have good bulbs and replace them often. Heres an example of what VHO's can do. This is KaptKens tank as of the other day when John and i stopped over. 2x48" 10k and 2x48" super actinic.

I was talking about the browning out of the coral not keeping favia even if it would die.

it's a green star polyp. Ask Ryan at Saltcritters. He has some all the time!

oh no. It's just a soft coral. It grows like a mat with green polyps that stand on it. I can grow on rocks or even your glass. Some people have used it as a background instead of painting the back.

In the pics i posted the green branching thing in the center is a SPS, maybe green slimmer. The big reddish thing on the right is a soft coral, kenya tree maybe and there are some zoa/paly, GSP and a Pocillopora in there also.

You could do just about any soft coral, mushroom zoa/paly you want. You could do LPS like acans and chalice too.

Have you ever thought about saving all of the money to buy the corals you would like, and instead investing in good lighting? If you wait a bit and get the good lighting first, you will be able to keep whatever you want later. Take a step back to take 2 forward kind of thing? Not a criticism here, just a suggestion. If you buy all of the corals and they go brown, or dont pop as much due to the subdued lighting, you may not be as happy as you would have been if you had the lighting before you purchased the corals.
