Hanging aquarium from Aquarium Architecture

Copyright © Aquarium Architecture
We couldn't resist showing you this hanging reef tank from Aquarium Architecture.
Aquarium Architecture Manchester has been signed up to install this fully suspended aquarium with client Biddle Sawyer Silks.
All the equipment will be located above the 3000 (l) x 870 (h) x 700 (w) cm opti-white aquarium which will house Australian only corals, sourced solely from reef farms and donor frags.
Very different!

Insane Setup

Default Insane Setup

This approach is soooo cool! I saw a setup like this once before (on-line somewhere) and can only think of the engineeing to do this right.. a really fun project.

The dimensions shown must be in milimeters, not centimeters (cm). If you do the math in cm this tank would be 98' x 28' x 22' ! Seems like 9.8' x 2.8' x 2.2' seems more realistic.

Think about the load (correcting the cm to mm of course), this tank will be 483 US Gallons, a gallon of water is 8.63 lbs.. the water alone will weigh 4, 025lbs! There is of course the weight of the tank (assume 400+lbs)... hanging almost 5,000 lbs (2.5 tons!) from the celing is just a great engineering project.

Thanks for posting a dream tank rgrking!

all I can say is, I bet there's a lot of steel reinforcement.

Oh man, this is too cool! But I have to admit, I wouldn't want to give it a go in my house. I'd just be way too nervous about something going wrong O_o REALLY cool to look at, though!

Would you let your kids or pets play under that? Even knowing all the reinforcement, I couldn't.

When guessing tank weight I use 10 lbs/gal Grumpy, it's a rough guess number that gives a little fudge factor for rock and sand.
So that would put the stuff inside the tank at about 4,830 lbs add 400 lbs for the tank and you have 5,230 lbs. Just to give y'all an idea how much that is a 2012 Chevy Silverado 1500 LTZ crew cab 4X4 has a curb weight of 5274 lbs.

Yea, not for my house. I worry enough about my 180 gal tank.

No kids or pets would be allowed under that.

Yup, sure did, but for me 2.5 tons is a hard amount to visualize. A Chevy pickup is much easier to grasp the weight.

you boys don't hang trucks from your ceilings? jees what is this world coming too...

Of course that is a computer image and not the actual installation as far as I can tell. I'd bet my wife would be displeased about 5200lbs suspended over an area my 2 year old could wander under.
