To sponge or not to sponge? - Reef-Geeks

Should I remove my sponge in my baffles of my sump? I clean it about once ever two weeks and it is always filthy. But my concern is that it is becoming a nitrate factory and given my current nitrate problems "20 ppm" I am wondering if I should take it out?

You could pull the sponge, clean the area, then put the sponge back in.

Get rid of it skinz. The filth you find in it when you clean it is bacteria. If you were to clean it every day or two it might not be so bad but cleaning it every two weeks its acting just like bioballs

Ok I will remove it tonight. It does catch a little chaeto but that isn't a big issue, my Lamarks Angel will like that treat every now and then.

I never clean mine....I just let it build up. I just sucked about .5" thick of detritus out of my fuge the other day. This is the fist time I have ever done that. The pods and junk love the muck.

I would say to keep it but clean it...I mean really clean it...every couple of days...it still collects a bunch of crap that will otherwise be kept in the tank...and eventually sucked in the skimmer

I have removed the sponge a few days ago and everything seems fine.

Thats the best thing Skinz is to remove that sponge, its a nitrate factor unless your willing to clean it every 2 days
