Default Cleaning used tank sand

Thoghts? is it a reasonable thing to do? will it be loaded with phosphates? it came from the ocean and was live, then bagged washed and used, is there a difference?

So this was used in someone else's tank? I would probably just get new sand. It could have lots of dirt and dead material in it.

Yes, it is my old sand, just wondered if it could be reused or properly cleaned up

stick it in a 5g bucket and run a hose through it till the water run clear. That should wash most of the crud out. I doubt there has been much biomineralization that would bind phosphates to it.

if its calcium based sand it might. it would dissolve some of the outer layer and any bound phosphates would be released.

I'd give it a soak in some RO/DI water just to be sure. This will strip any phosphate out.

I wouldn't call it corrosive , it's just a matter of equalibrium, if the sand has more than the water, it will leach into the water, untill it equals itself out. I would do a couple of soaks to get the sand really clean, especilally if it's been sitting stagnet for a while.
