Default new tank set up--thread # 2

using pvc for aquascaping?
is there a good thread on how to do this?
what glue is safe to use to keep the pvc together?
is the idea is to allow water to get in the pipes and stay still or do the pipes get drilled so there's some circulation?

any hints, pics, vids about any aspect of using pvc to support and anchor lr would be appreciated.

Just use the PVC joint glue once it cures it's safe....At one time I had PVC structure so my rock was held up off the sand. Mine didn't work as expected as ditritus built up inside the PVC.
From what I have seen the PVC is drilled to let water in but not really flow unless you wanted to attach a PH to it. The water is allowed to fill the PVC to add weight. It will still float though so you can attach rock to it with ties to hold it down. Then add base rock on top of the PVC, this way you don't have to have as much rock to make it look full. It also allows for greater water flow in and around the rock work which makes it harder for diritus to build up. It also increases swimming area.

Not sure on how to build it for your tank though, cause it kinda depends on what kinda look you going for. In most cases it is best used to build a rock wall.

Yeah I agree with Azurel, just use the two part PVC glue. Once dry it is good.

But I also would be leery of doing the PVC, I would have flow through it to prevent detritus build up. Plus it will be hard to hide.

I recommend using electrical PVC cause it is grey.

What exactly are you trying to do Paul? If your trying to make pillars then just drill the rock where you want it and slip the pvc into it. I dont think i would suggest making a rack unless you plan to have pumps blowing water under the rocks.

True Chris that is why for me personally I would, if doing racks attach 2 MJ 1200s and drill in the right spots so water would be jetted out of the PVC to help keep detritus from settling. You would have to be able to get to the MJ to be cleaned though....Some of those in that link are sweet. What size tank again?

Paul

Sounds ok for aqua scaping but why do you want to glue it?? As long as the joints fit tight and it stationary I fail to see the need to glue it. My old closed loop system in the back of the rocks was submerged and water pumping through never had any problems an I didn't glue it.

I agree with Bill. If you are just trying to make a framework then stick everything together dry.

Something you might want to look at is egg crate

You just cut or snap it to fit and prop it up. You can get it at HD or Lowes.

What about not drilling a hole a letting the air stay in. Im sure you will fit 20+ pounds of rock on a 2-3ft pillar. would that be enough to keep it sunk, and not allow it to float to the top?
