What is a Pico??? a Nano????

How are these ran. I know they are smaller tanks, but do they use a skimmer? Do they use a sump? What kind of filtration is on them? Can you just use an old 5 gallon tank and put some sand and water in it and just do water changes?

When I WAS doing water changes on the 3g I would simply take water from the larger system and do a 50%+ water change on the 3g. With such a small amount of volume it was easy to do water changes so the little filter on the back did a well enough job.

I want to drill the bottom of the tank and put a sump underneath the tank and have a top down viewing tank for clams eventually with the 3g. And put all the filtration and supporting items in the sump.

So is it just a cheap simple HOB filter?

Yea little bitty thing that I think came with it. The chick that had it before me put some little rubble rock in the back container which worked pretty well.

so glen........are you thinking of starting one of your own?

Well I have a bunch of small tanks in the closet. I have some small HOB filters too.

I have this black and white clown that just don't get along with the percs. He would look good in one with some zoos and macros in there.

Glen, you can have a skimmer or anything else on nano's but IMO they are small enough that water changes are really all you need. You could have just the tank and a pump for flow and as long as you kept up on water changes you should be just fine

hmmmmm water changes..... I have a hard time doing them on my big tank.

Seriously though I might try setting one up this weekend. I'll see if any of my old HOB filters work. They haven't been wet for a couple of years.

maybe . I did but I don't think i'm going to keep it up. I just wanted to see what it looked like. I only have mushrooms in it and not enough light. lol

well mushrooms is a start isn't it?!
have you taken it down already or are you gonna get a light fixture for it and pretty it up a bit?

Just wondering if you have broke down the nano yet. If you haven't could we maybe get a pic of it?

Are you planning on leaving it up and running. If so what are you planning on adding to it?

If you do the hob filter, use the aquaclear 110. The pump is on one side leaving the most space for media/fuge contents. I had one on my old nano.

It's got a filter built into the hood. I'll prolly just keep it and do water changes. I might add my black clown if I can ever catch it.

Do you have the marineland hex with the filter in the top? I just put one together a couple of weeks ago. Out of all the tanks, I have had the most fun with this one. The only advice I can add is to grab a little pump for in there. It didn't seem to have enough water movement for me. So I bought one of those little 250 biocube pumps. I thought for sure it would create a flushing toilet. But after a few minutes everything settled down and presently is doing great. I also changed out the light for a 50/50 spiral bulb. They sell them at petco for $12.00.
I think if you add a little piece of rock with your shrooms, a shrimp/hermit crab and that clown. You will enjoy it!! good luck!

the shrooms are on some small rocks. there's copes and amphs all over in there. I think there's plenty of flow. even the shrooms move every now and then. It is that tank you were talking about too. I saw those bulbs. If I keep it going I'll get one of those.

So are you keeping this tank Glen?

no I don't think so. It's still up and it's fairly easy to do, but I just don't want one right now. I might do this later on though.
