Hammer coral issue

Default Hammer coral issue

I have noticed a sagging head with what looks to be calcium build up on my hammer coral. At first i thought the head that was sagging was dying. Not the case after almost 2 weeks it is still alive and the tenticle or lobes move to the touch. It is almost broke off now and I am wondering if this head will still live? Also why would it do this? I have had it almost 2 years now with never a poroblem. It started outwith only 2 heads and barely bigger than a golf ball in size. Now it is larger than a grapefruit.

Heads that get shaded by growth will often recede and eventually die. You can frag off the shaded heads and they'll usually bounce right back.

Could be slow polyp bail too - if it falls off, and lands on a rock or something it can create a new colony... do you have a pic??? That'll help us better understand what you are talking about!

nice!! Wherever that piece lands - assuming nothing nefarious happens to it, it will probably start a new little hammer colony I'd put a tiny rock under it so its got something to attach to!

Well the piece finnaly fell away and it looks good after 2 days. Looks like I will have another hammer out of this! Also the main hammer looks great! Bigger than ever. You would have never known it had a problem.

I remembered a candy cane that I had do this, too, and I finally found a picture..

I ended up with another colony, eventually.

Very cool example of Polyp Bailout. I've had this happen, with a large Favia and a Frogspawn, in the past. Here's the Favia.

Did the polyps that fell off live and grow? Also what causes it to do this.

Yup, I ended up with three or four frags about this size..

Last I read up on it, there was no 100% sure answer as to 'why?'- though stress in one form or another was suggested as one cause.
