Sun Coral Tank... for Barb

hey barb, i know i know its been along time and im just getting to post this.

so here photos from my mini tank build that i promises barb. this tank is i think .5gal and right now it houses a soft ball size sun coral. i was given this project by a friend she wanted a low light coral and she wanted a octopus but she cant have more than 1 gal in here dorm. so i figure lets do sun coral there easy and they need no light. pluss all the extra food for the octo can feed the suncoral.

so heres the photos. i dont have one of it set up because.... i lost it. and i haven't got her the octo yet (and wont untill i know for sure she taken care of the tank properly).
the octo were going to get her is a Caribbean dwarf this tank is still too small for it but she really wants to try. i know a guy that breeds them so im going to buy one from him, that way were not hurting wild populations.

the parts


cut the top for the pump


silicone the pump in place so the octo cant get out easy (the tank makes it how it sealed and to climb out he has to go over a lip and hold himself up out of water completely upside down. most a time this will prevent them from leaving a tank. ive had experience with this method on larger tanks and it works good)


finish painted back and bottom. and white silicone on the lips. in the tank is yellow sun coral and fiji pink sand. looks good. no light been running for close to a month now i think.


ill get a finished photo when i can. i live 2 hours from her so its not easy:-p

Like the idea for a sun coral tank but I'd drop the octopus thing. You'll find it on the floor more then in the tank with the top open like that. IMO I've never had one but from everything I've read you gotta lock a lid secure.

I agree with Bill on that one, get a lid on it or she'll have octo man running around the dorms.

made me think of the face hugger from Alien lol, that is a sweet tank! haven't seen one like that

haha yea i don't really want to do the octo part, so i might never get around to ordering it for her im a busy man!

haha but was still a fun tank to build. right now im working on a few different jellyfish tanks, ill share when done of course plus i got some other... fish related things going on i hope soon to share

Cool little tank. I also would expect the octo to jump ship, they're too darn curious for their own good. How about a couple sexy shrimp?

I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished pics too! ...though I agree with you and everyone else - try talking her out of the octopus and more towards a tiny fish (like a cool goby - blue neon, yellow neon, clown, trimma or eviota) or cool shrimp???

I agree with everyone else. Kind of risky with octo. Even aquariums have a tough time keeping those buggers locked down. Even with lids they find ways to squish out. My local aquarium had mysterious crab losses in other tanks and later discovered it was the octo. LOL he went out for midnight strolls.

lol that's kinda funny in a way. I've heard they are really sneaky.
