Shrimp Molt - with eggs!

Default Shrimp Molt - with eggs!

Turned on the tank lights this morning to see a peppermint's molt stuck to an intake. Thought nothing of it and got my tongs to remove it when I noticed there were eggs in the abdomen of the shell!

Now I know NOTHING about peppermint shrimp reproduction. All I know is that I have a male and female shrimp, and she has eggs almost every two to three weeks. I thought it was super interesting that when she molted this time, her eggs went with it. Does anyone know if that's how they "lay" their eggs??

Anywho, here's some pics of it, just because I think it's soooo cool!!

When I found it:

With light underneath to better see the egg sac:

Interesting, but I thought shrimp held onto their eggs until hatching. That's pretty weird.

Neat pic but weird indeed. Maybe like Joanne said that the eggs were no good. I don't think the males will carry the eggs at all.

males don't carry the eggs. The female does till they hatch. Usually they molt and then have eggs.

Here's a couple of links

Captive Rearing of Peppermint Shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni) by Frederick Scott Noack- Reefkeeping.com

Feature Article: Behavior And Breeding Of Peppermint Shrimp — Advanced Aquarist | Aquarist Magazine and Blog

and then a similar species. This is a great guide.

You have a spawning pair...too cool. Maybe you should give it a try raising the babies

Haha if I had the time, I would! But I actually just sold the pair to my reef friend. He has a nice corner 75 gallon with a pair of breeding cardinals, but it's plagued with aiptasia. So, he wanted the peppermints for it - and now, he may just get baby peppermints, too!

Did you ever try to raise them? Any babies pop up out of no where?

No, by the time I had found the molt, it had been at least 12 hours, if not longer, and I had it sitting in the dish for a few hours before taking the pic. In November I sold the pair of peppermints to a local reefer friend who was having a major issue with aiptasia (needless to say he isn't anymore ).
