Pistol Shrimp - Reef-Geeks

There is a nice article on snapping shrimp in the Oct Aquarium Fish International magazine. I was hoping for some breeding info to pass on to rgrking for his harlequins, but there wasnt any breeding info other than decribing how the females release the eggs into the water column. What was really cool however, is that these shrimp dont just share burrows with gobies. There are atleast 2 species that share a den with fish spearing mantis shrimp! How cool of a display would that make? The article also describes the snap of their claws, in a fashion Ive never heard. I knew it was the fastest movement in the animal world, but what I did not know was that the pop produces a flash of light, and researcher suggest, a temperature of 8,540 degres farenheit. The flash isnt visible to the naked eye unfortuately. The heat is generated for only a fraction of a second, by the collapsing of the cavitation bubble caused by a jet of water expelled by a socket in the claw, that is expelled when the claw is snapped shut. The article also stated that the shrimp may use their claw to excavate its burrow under rock. Which explains the random "pop" people hear from outside the tank, for no apparent reason.

Ive been looking everywhere I can about breeding any shrimp in general, and especially harlequins. You have the best article that can be found so far.

There's a guy that owns a facility in HA that bred them 15 years ago. I just haven't had time to contact him.

Oh sweet! Someone has actually reared the larvae then! This is good news! No guessing on the food source then. Ask him if he has bred Randall's pistol shrimp too
