Default Hello from Brandon, FL

Hi Everyone, dropping in for a quick intro. I found this great site thru ReefTools.

Currently I do not have a tank set up, but I am in the process of gathering info and quotes for a custom tank & (maybe) setup. This unfortunately is proving harder than I had ever imagined. Getting reps/company's to follow thru and call me back… I'm floored at the lack of response. Perhaps a stock RR tank is the way to go, but it's not really what I want.

Any advise from the Lords of the Underworld? Honestly I'm all ears. If there's anyone on the site that lives local, Brandon, FL, msg me and tell me your experiences with the local places or where to go for a custom setup. Maybe this local person might also like to take on the challenge and help me with the configuration & setup themselves? It's an option I'd definitely consider. As we all know, it's always nice to play with someone else's budget.

Looking forward to the info exchange, always so much to learn.

/Sally

Welcome to the site Sally!!!!!

There's quite a few Geeks that live down in FL. I'm sure they will be by shortly.

What are you trying to set up? What type of fish/corals are you wanting?

I'll do some digging to. Maybe we can come up with someone to help you out.

Morning and thanks for the welcome!

I'm looking to set up a full reef that will eventually support hard & soft corals. Lots of live rock, some fish but not too many, anemone & clowns, cleaner shrimp - calm, peaceful. I'm looking into a custom, pre-drilled tank because of where I need to put it. Other notables, suspended LEDs. End game is hands-on accessibility as I like to hand feed. I don't want an encased "picture frame" that has fish swimming in it. (honestly, if I had enough money I'd just convert my swimming pool so I could dive in - next life ). And the carpenter is on standby.

Hope that is helpful.

Thanks Lance, I sent you an email before I read your last post. I'll have to send you the drawing I have as it does not conform to standard tank sizes. I'll give you as much information as possible.

Hi Sally and welcome to reefgeeks. I am in Tampa, but I can't advise you on who to deal with for custom setups as I have bought my systems used from fellow reefers.

I've had similar problems with custom tank manufacturers. Took about 10 calls to different places before one would help and then they really sucked to work with, after about a year and a half, I had most of a tank

Glad Lance is helping out, he makes some nice tanks!

Here's my experience, since you said custom tank. You have to know exactly what you want, then the store calls it in to their manufacturers, the manufacturers come back with an outrageous price so the store will try to negotiate for you. The manufacturer has this stance that "I gave my price either they want it or they don't" while the store says, "that's crazy and I know they can do better". So while all these emails go on begin the scenes, they aren't tellin you anything.
Anyway, for a custom tank- just be patient.
As far as set up, I've worked in a LFS for several years and one consistency is when people want a quote for a "set up" they really don't know what they want. Most experienced hobbiests will agree that the complete set ups you see in some of the on line vendors magazines are crap- so they will try not to sell you one of those. You basically need to know which parts you need and how much quality you want behind each piece.

Course there is that red sea set up... That thing is pretty awesome! Have you seen that??

I thought they had a bigger one too, but I don't have much time to search ATM. I saw this at a pet expo and for an all in one, it's pretty nifty.
