Wish they had this sale for all of their tanks. They used to include hex's and cubes, but I think they lost their shirt so they dont do it anymore. A 55dollar 55g, is the perfect candidate to learn to drill a tank. If I had ordered one drilled it would have been about 200$. I figure I could screw up 2 and still be ahead. If I get it right the first time, Im in business!

55's generally are undrillable.
quoting club president If you drill a tempered tank it will shatter. If the tank is older and you can't find any info on whether it is tempered or not I have 2 suggestions to test for the glass being tempered. Put the tank outside on a bright day and with a pair of polarized sunglasses look through the tank if you see what appear to be little circles or squares the tank is tempered. Another way is to use a glass cutter. In the spot you want to drill apply some cutting oil to the inside of the tank. Using a glass cutter, roll it across the glass. If the glass cutter scores the tank it is most likely not tempered if it leaves no mark then it is hardened and tempered.

Most tanks are only tempered on the bottom. It's cheaper to manufacture that way.

Hopefully there are more than just scraps left for you to pick through. What sizes are you looking to get?

I think that sounds like a great idea having a tank just for pods and macro algae.

And I've always wanted to cultivate my own pods. I'm going to go to Puget Sound sometime in the next few weeks to catch some wild pods and see if I can breed them. I will have to acclimate them to a warmer water temperature (even without a heater, the tank wouldn't get as cold as the Sound is). If I am successful, then I am set! Maybe I should do a build thread on this... Hmmmm....

you should definitely do a thread on this. I am very interested in seeing this done. If you do it well, I may give it a go to help with feeding my seahorse throughout the day while I am at work.

I am doing a 55 fuge/macro tank so I will be very interested in your thread. You can culture pods easily in green water or a chaeto/ulva tank. The biggest things I have researched to be detrimental are protein skimmers and too many powerheads. You want low flow. Maybe a large predator to make ammonia to feed the macro (not something that eats pods obviously), or simply start with a huge number of pods to make ammonia to feed the macro. Reefcleaners.org has a ton of species to buy, and info on their care.
