Default Home remedies for eczema??

My 8 year old has a terrible case of eczema on his legs- he always has, it just moves from lower to upper legs. Anyway he's been to a couple of dermatologists and tried a couple different scripts, but I was wondering if anyone here has ever tried any home remedies.

Ive tried lavender oil, & rose hip supplements. I've also tried dtletergents free of dyes and color- but it's been a while maybe I'll try that again...

Anyone got any ideas?

Cold showers/baths. I found my eczema to be irritated by warm water, and after I started taking only cold showers it has gone down, sometimes to the point of being gone. It takes some getting use to, but its worth it. Ironically, sunlight seems to help too. I've noticed that after being outside for extended periods of time my eczema tends to leave for awhile.

HTH,
~Meus.

Edit: Honestly, I have never found a lotion, cream, oil or remedy that helps at all. So if you find one, let me know please.

It is a 3 part system
Acne Treatment - Proactiv® - Official site - Special Offer
It drys the skin though, so I would not get the lotion it offers and go w/ a real lotion like gold bond. Takes a min to work so patients is the key

+1 on the sun light, the Doc will confirm sun light kills the bacteria the causes it. Tanning so you don't need to be in the sun or get a tan just expose the skin to the right spectrum. 8-10 every other day. Easier than the pro active

peppermint oil helps sooth the burning too, for over the counter lotions I prefer to use aveno, its mild and doesn't cause many breakouts... Eucerin is good too, but thick and oily!

Aveno is the best, but for a lotion kinda spendy. They do offer 55sp though and w/ a tanning bed and a 8year old that sounds like a good combo

What type eczema is it? And I don't think a tanning bed is needed, just a bit of time outside.

The kid is always outside. Last year when it was on his lower legs he had white spots amidst the tan and he looked funny.
Any lotion with any fragrance in it- the menthol from gold bond, which I tried once and he cried!! It was extremely painful for him. I think peppermint would be too. I have vagicream on hand cause it has the most numbing agent at 20% benzocaine.

Rgr, I will go through those links.
Kim, I woulda never thought about proactive...

This was last night-

Meus, he's never inside! Lol.
I have to fight with the boy when he wants to go get his friends at 8 and 9 am, lol.
He's very tan and being in Florida our outings usually include water.

I used to know a guy with psoriasis and sunlight helped him out tremendously, so I thought it would work with my own kid- but it doesn't.

I know my pool makes it worse so I'm glad it's getting cold.

Rgr- I went thru your links and I now have a list of stuff to buy from the health foods place!

We will see if it works.

Careful w/ the pro active, it is an alcohol biased treatment, and after hearing how sensitive his skin is I recommend to use w/ cation. The product does say they can treat eczema

It looks like nummular eczema, the same stuff I have. Most of the time I find cold weather and allergy season to bother it the most. But again, the warm showers also make it flair up. Try getting him to take a cool shower, and then afterwards let the water evaporate instead of rubbing it off with a towel. Hope he feels better soon, eczema sucks.

Ohh, and another thing that Meus reminded me of - stop using soap in the shower. Literally... throw it all away.

Just a little soap in the "smelly areas", but stop the all over lathering. Mine flairs up pretty much anytime I travel, wintertime, dry seasons, use soap, use lotion, look at perfume, enter Macys, etc.

I lotion myself with Aveno from head to toe after every shower, don't use soap, use Purex as my laundry detergent, never use fragrances - Mine was really bad like that when I was his age - we got to a point I wasn't allowed to shower but once a week!!! It eventually broke though, and once the main rash went away it is much easier to control is small breakouts.

That's a bummer. If you buy proactive, get it at the mall and use cash, once they get your credit card, they will relentlessly charge it every month, even after they stop sending the product and you return the stuff they already sent. So far I've paid over $100 for nothing.

I think you might be able to find it at the mall if you look. I saw it once at 1 of the stands that they have going through the walk ways.
