I wanted to run a Phosguard/carbon mix and was wondering what people's thoughts were on using a regular Eheim canister filter instead of a dedicated reactor. I would pull out the filter media and biosubstrate and just fill it with Phosguard and carbon. I've used a dedicated reactor before, but having an external pump was noisy (before it died completely) and the reactor was a pain to change the media.
I've also worked with a phosban reactor on another tank and was thoroughly unimpressed with how easily it leaked. If you looked at it wrong, the fittings would start leaking . Eheim has been an awesome brand so far, my experience is that they are dead silent, never stop working and are easy to disconnect and service. And they don't LEAK!I know it wouldn't have reverse flow, but I don't think it really matters since I won't be using GFO in it.

same thing as a reactor - cant imagine why it would work any differently??? reactors are just cheaper than paying for all that filter media and throwing it away
mwahahaha

Should work fine IMO. The only thing to worry about would be stuff grinding inside and creating dust. You can get around this by packing the chamber.
Also depending on what media is being used the flow rate will effect its efficiency. If media X needs a long contact time and you cant adjust the flow then you will have to add a lot more of that media to get the same effect. |
