I'm looking at led's for my 75 gallon tank. I really would like to get into led's due to thier low operation cost.
Right now I have just softies, lps, and nps corals. I'm currently running a Viper 70 watt hqi. JBJ 70W K-2 Viper HQI Fixture - AquaCave I would love to get a light(s) that can grow sps, but if it's not possible right now then so be it. I have two 175 watt single end metal halides with bat wing reflectors, but I don't want to jack up my electric bill. The issue is that I want to keep the price around $400. The marine land "reef capable" led's fit that budget, but I've seen some poor reviews on them. The upside is that their customer service seems to be great and that all the reviewed problems were resolved. The down side is that they only produce 130par @ 12" I think. On the other hand there are led's like the Al Sol. I love that they are dimmable, upgradeable and have great par. The problem is I would only be able to get one at the moment and I don't know when I'd get the money for a second one with christmas, birthdays, and possibly moving soon. I've only looked at a couple lights so I don't exactly have my heart set on only these lights. I would like to make up my mind soon so any advice would be great. |

how strongly do you want a fixture with your LEDs?
There are dimmable LED bulbs you can put into any household fixture that work well, or you can go full DIY if you are ambitious enough

I would love to do a DIY fixture, but I just don't have the time right now. The more I think about it the more I'm leaning toward the Al Sol. I haven't seen many reviews on them though.

So do I understand correct that you are lighting your 75 with 1 70 watt mh?
1 AI sol module is supposed to be equivalent in par to a 270 watt metal halide and uses 75 watts. The problem would be getting the light spread to light your whole tank, and you would have to gradually ramp up the intensity on the sol module over a month or more to keep from bleaching your corals if they are only used to 70 watt mh. You could always use 1 module on one side of the tank and the mh on the other side until you can afford another module. I haven't tried any of the ebay leds, so I can't advise for or against them. That said A lfs here in tampa has the ai sol on sale Aqua Illumination WAS $525 NOW $390/ BUY 3 OR MORE @$380EA If interested I can pm you the phone #

AI dropped their prices across the board, regular modules are $400 now and nano modules are $300. But, the controller adds another $80. They are fantastic lights, and although cheaper in the long term, the upfront price is unfortunately very high.
The PAR 38 type bulbs may be an option, I think they are less than $150 each.

The 70 watt MH is over my 47 column tank right now. I'll be moving everything out of that tank and my 30 gallon into the 75 once I get a new light.
The AI Sol Blue and my viper MH on the other side seems to be my top choice right now. Most of my corals are about 10" under my MH so I think it's going to take a couple months to increase the AI Sol, but at the same time that means I can keep the light higher possible getting a better spread. We'll have to see, if that's the way that I go, considering how focused these leds are. Here's a thread with a lot of info on the par ratings for the SOL AquaIllumination PAR Measurements - Page 98 - Reef Central Online Community |
