I plan on having one on my system for occasional use. I used to start it in a bucket for a few hours to eliminate the blowing de through the tank problem. Water is sparkling clear when de is used. Looking forward to the experts chiming in here about sw use of it myself.

You can use one, but I've never seen them useful in saltwater. The water in a reef tank stays surprisingly clear.

spiny, i'm talking about scraping off crappy algae, while the filter would be running to take the scraps outta the water. that'd be my only use of it.
here's a link to one on amazon

after reading customer reviews, I'd be a bit skeptical......seems like after much "tweaking/repair/tech support/maintenance" that they'll give a thumbs up....also it looks like it's best suited for "up to a 55 gallon" tank......I'd be nervous about the problems that can - and most likely will - happen.......that's just my 2 cents though

anyone every use one OR know someone who had/does?

I use my brine shrimp net when i brush off the hair algae lol. It gathers it all up and its easy to rinse.

A DE filter will plug up pretty quick, I would think you could use a little Eheim canister filter with filter floss in there to grab rogue scrapings. Might be easier, but do whatever floats your boat, just remember to post your results

I suppose in talking about this and understanding what you guys are talking about - doesn't a filter sock do basically the same thing?

it will, but it's a long way to the sock, with lots of hiding places for pieces of crud to stay in the tank, sand, shells, lr, while an in-tank grabber is more efficient and adds the extra circulation

aha - makes sense.....

so, one could argue with an appropriate amount of flow keeping your solids suspended and traveling through your overflow in a perfectly executed manner, a filter sock could work just as well...

of course, we all know perfect execution doesn't exist

abso. if i hit the cue ball perfectly and hard enough on the break, all the balls will go into the pockets! and if my tank is set up and running perfectly nothing will die.

Paul I have one of the big Diatom filters but the motor went out a few years ago and I stopped using it, was used mainly for clean up of the sand and rocks, didn't really use it as a main filter.

Nothing wrong with using a DE filter for polish the water from time to time. If your worried about the DE dust in the tank run it first on so DI water till the dust is gone then move it to the tank.
