Replacement mate?

Default Replacement mate?

So one of my onyx clown fish decided to take to flying the other day. I found her when I got home from work behind the tank. I am almost positive it was the female. I know that generally clowns do not tolerate clowns added after the initial addition, but if I were able to find another female onyx would I be able to add her? I really don't want the male to be all alone. I bought them as a pair and wasn't sure if he would ever take to another female...

Thanks,

Personally I would add a smaller one to the one you have. That way the one you have now will change to a female. It may only take a few weeks for that to happen. Or you can get a proven female, but then you're taking more of a chance on them not matching up or even getting along.

The largest juvenile (more or less unsexed) become male. The largest male becomes female. They can't go backwards, but they do move 'up'.

This is pretty much dead on.

When they are born they are non sexed. They then start to sort themselves out. The largest and usually most aggressive will change into the female. The next largest clown will change into a male. The rest will stay non sexed until one of the two either die or move on.
