Monti = clownfish snack?

Default Monti = clownfish snack?

Anyone know why my clownfish would nom on my monti? He is picking at this one area that is now white and missing skin. I'm confused... Is this typical clown behavior? Is it a sign my monti is dying and the clown is munching on dead tissue? The monti has been growing and the color has been improving greatly since I acquired it.

Help!!!

honestly mine have never touched my monti. I haven't even heard of them eating corals. Not sure what's going on here. I wonder if there's pods on there? not really sure on this one.

or the clown could be trying just to move it. Is it at a corner or side that it's happening on?

The only time I have seen my clowns pick at a coral, was when they were nesting making a safe place for their eggs. Do you have 2 clowns in the same tank? I know its not typical breeding season for them but could be a surprise.

My clowns breed year round. I put some tiles in for them last night and night momma was trying to move them lol. I bet that's what it is. Just nesting nature.

Well it's the clown in my 2 gallon, and it's still a baby. Maybe a few months old. It is the only fish in the tank, too. And it's not happening on the corner of the monti, it's actually almost smack in the middle. I'd think it was a pod as well, but he's been doing it more than once, and I'm almost positive there isn't a pod there every time. It's just very bizarre...

If the coral is growing then i doubt the clown is picking at it because its dieing. The clown might be picking at slim on the coral or maybe the clown is bored? Can the coral be moved?

food generally settles right in the middle too - so food could have settled there and he got carried away

I would also either remove the monti or remove the clown - give the clown a chance to change his habit...

Any fish can go rouge!! hehe

Time to get that clown to pair with the other in your FOWLR tank.

I can move the coral out of the tank and put it in my 29. I'll have to re-aquascape my 2 gallon though (3rd time in a week and a half :P )

Btw HI CHRIS! Where've ya been??

Ooohhh good point about the food. That very well could be what he's nipping at.

And this isn't my maroon - that juvenille is in my 29 gallon. The clown in my 2 gallon is a baby oscellaris. I'd hate to see this little one get killed by the much more viscious maroon in my 29

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a maroon paired with an oscellaris before. That would be interesting to see! Too bad I care too much about the baby to make him an experiment :P

he might just be trying to use it as a host too....it is a nice size and seems like a protector in your tank ....I'd try turkey basting out the food that settles, and turkey basting the baby when he's around the coral too......maybe try putting a "safe house" of some sort too that he might like??? just a thought...

I had thought he was perhaps hosting the monti, because it looked like similar behavior my maroon displayed when it was hosting an RBTA a while back. He hasn't picked on it again, and I've been making sure food doesn't land there.

I recently added a bunch of flame algae, so I'm hoping he will see that as a "safe haven." Also gonna try to get some recent pics up of the tank since re-aquascaping.

They're totally fine now. I've been making sure no food has been settling on the monti, and he seems to be leaving it alone, so all is well
