Don't worry about it they take forever to grow. I had one for about 5 years and it got about 3 inches bigger then when I first got it and then died for no reason. Had it in a 180 tank.

Well, lots of hotels and restaurants have aggressive setups if he gets bigger faster than you get money, lol. Specifically a hotel by Marriott called Homewood suites. So far every one I've been in has had the same lobby including a large fish tank- some are fresh some are salt, but it's worth keeping in mind when or if you ever need it.

When I first got in the hobby I did. I bought a couple of manderins not really knowing how to care for them. I thought you can just add flake food to the tank and walk away

Yep....about 13 years ago we added a dogface puffer and couldn't find our other fish in the mornings shortly after adding him??? One night as soon as we turned off the lights the puffer went into attack mode....we quickly turned the light back on and the puffer spit out a clownfish and then just swam real slow again. Needless to say that was the beginning of us researching before we added to our tank and Mr. Puffer went back to the LFS.

First let me point out that this is one of my favorite things about this forum- instead of beating him up and acting like a bunch of flawless prudes, inlanders "mistake" gets turned into a discussion about the same mistake we've all made. No drama. Love that.
Anyway yes- my first saltwater purchase was a clown fish and a sebae. Put in my tank, oh I'd say about 3 days after I filled it up! Then when my live rock came in the mail, I threw all 200 pounds in straight from the shipping box. I called the company and cussed them out, lol. They were the ones who advised me to start researching on forums. After I learned a bit more I felt like an a$$. |

I agree with you about this forum Tizzo. I have left 2 other forums. Now at first you would think it's because I dont always play well with others. Nope. I asked if a pair of maroon clowns would be fine in 29g tank. I got treated like an a$$hole for even considering this. Then I said my jawfish tank would have a 5" sand bed which would double as a place for anaerobic bacteria to remove nitrate. I was told I was an a$$hole and the sand bed would need to be no less than 6" to remove nitrate, jawfish need a sandbed deeper than 5", and the whole tank would eventually die from the hydrogen sulfide.
We all make mistakes, this is a hobby. Fish die and we lose money when we make a mistake, but that is how we learn sometimes. Have you ever seen a 30" long by 10" wide pleco try to turn around in a 55g? He had to swim up the back wall of the tank and rotate with his tail out of the water lol. You will one day have to make a hard decision about your sweetlips. It will be either a finacial hit if you build a huge tank for him, or a sad day when you have to hand him over to a lfs. To criticize the purchase would be stupid. We are here to meet people who have a common interest, and learn from each other. Not to put others down who made a mistake to make ourselves feel good. For that mtter, so far there isnt even a mistake. The fish fits in your tank for now lol. Just as my turtle "kinda" still fits in his 10g tank. No clue what Im gonna do with him when he is full grown. That is future Variko's problem. Current Variko is still ok. |
