Default Maroon clowns

What would the minimum tank size be for a pair of maroons w/ a bta? 40g too small if they are the only inhabitants?

probably not. I'm glad you said only inhabitants though. They are probably the meanest in the clown family. It's the damsel gene.

Hmm maybe they would do fine in my 55g fuge by themselves. I plan on inbreeding PNG maroon clowns until I get a lightning. LOL

We have two saddleback clowns and an haddoni anemone in a 29 but that tank is drilled and connected with the other tanks. I dont think i would try them in anything smaller then a 20g long. Water quality for the anemone in a small tank is going to be the main thing you will need to worry about.

The tank will be plumbed into my main system. Chris do you think that the female would kill the male in a tank smaller than a 55? When full grown, would they be ok and maybe even breed in a 29g?

they should be ok. People are using much smaller tanks for their breeding pairs.

Ok so a 29 is big enough for a breeding pair of Maroon clowns w/ a bta, and the female wont murder the male. This is the question I asked that made me leave another forum because I got terribly rude answers. Just want to be sure here. I abandoned this idea as I was told the 29 was way too small. It this will work I would be thrilled.

With the BTA you need plenty of water movement, lots of lighting, and a pretty clean system. If you can just add a sump or something and you'll be fine.

I have a few 5 gallons, a couple of 10 gallons that are set up for my breeders and grow outs, and a 29 for a sump. I just need to get the plumbing done. I won't have an anemone in that tank though.

This will allow me to keep a nem from stinging my corals if he goes for a walk/swim, and keep the maroons out of my 120 peaceful aquarium
lol.

lol. good thinking. My seabae has been in my tank for years now and never moves, and never bothers anything. It's even touching some zoanthids all day long. They don't seem to mind either.

This is cool. I didnt think I would be able to house a pr of maroons in a 29. This changes things up a bit.

You will know if the female is going to kill the male right away. They aren't like human females where they are nice at the start and then get phycho. They are phycho from the start and then mellow out.

You can calm the female some by placing the male in a clear container with holes drilled in it in the same tank with her for a few days. Its not a 100% thing but its better then nothing.

Check out Matts site on how he paired the lightning clown. I think he pulled the female out for a while to let the male settle in.

Would the paired up maroons tolerate any othe species of fish in the 29? Or inverts for that matter? ie flame hawk, wartskin frogfish, harlequin shrimp, fire shrimp?

If you want to check out my tank thread (Amanda and Tom's Salty 20 Gal Adventure) I have a pair of Maroon clowns. I actually had the male(White Stripe) in first for about a week then added what turned out to be the female(Gold Stripe). I did not do this on purpose however. It just so happen that the Gold Stripe was larger and became the dominant one! We recently added a Sebae Anemone because the pair was hosting bunch of Dragon's Breath.

Anyway long story short our LFS said we would be okay with keeping a pair of Maroons a 20 gallon for a year or two before needing to move them into a larger tank. At this point Amanda and myself are deciding between a 40 gal breeder with 20 gal sump or 50 gal with 10 gal sump. So a 29 would be okay for a little from what I have been told.

They are nasty fish. Our pair did not bother each other they actually bonded immediately but they do not like the magnet cleaner or my hand in the tank haha. The boy is quite defensive. We keep a Diamond Watchmen Goby in there too clean the sand and they do not bother him as long as he avoids the Sebae.

Hope this helps.
