My daughter called me yesterday morning to tell me the starfish was eating "the big cool fish."
RIP Pearl, you were one of my favorites. ![]() ![]() The worst part is she was swimming happily at about 5:30 am before I left for work, nothing wrong with her. My water params are all good too. By the time I got home all that was left was part of the tail, and my long spined urchin was feasting on that, and by the time I could shoo him off there wasn't enough left to fish out. Oh well, now I need to get a replacment fish... I'm thinkin Flame Angel. |

What kind of start fish was it? Do you have anything in the tank that could have stung the fish and then the others moved in to clean up?

I hate mysterious fish deaths - why won't our fish leave us a note on the glass and tell us what we did wrong so we don't kill their friends from the same thing???

Monster Starfish
I have a seabee nem and a hatian nem in that tank, as well as the urchin, so there could have been a murder in my tank. Where is Grissom when you need him?? |

Those serpent stars can catch fish but they usually do it at night when the fish are sleeping(do fish really sleep?)

That daughter is 20, her sister is 22. I'm just happy the grand kids didn't see it.
Then yesterday when I get home my Mandarin is on the bottom of the tank, upside down, hardly moving. My wife said it looks like it had gotten stunned. I fished it out and dumped it in QT where it lasted only about 30 minutes. That's 2 of my favorite fish in 2 days. The water is good SG 1.024, pH 8.3, ammonia 0, nitrite traces, nitrate 2.5, PO4 2. I would love to know what is killin them. |

You could test your alk as thats very important. Those serpant stars are known for killing fish. And big fish being eaten isn't out of the ordinary.

Last night I got rid of Spike, my urchin. He was seen getting nasty to some of my remaining fish when they got near "his" rock. I hope it was him, cause I did find part of a spine stuck in the mandrin. Now I just have to wait a few days for my QT to stabilize, full water change, then I can get a new Flame Angel.
