Default running copper

I have a fish only tank up and running... was thinking of dosing with copper and keeping it that way. Are there any disadvantages of doing this?

Yes copper can mess with fish. Long term exposure messes with their kidneys or liver (cant remember which)

Are you having some sort of problem that you think you need to add copper?

I think the tang brought ich into my tank. There is no live rock, so just thought copper would do the trick

You could treat with copper but i thought you were wanting to run copper all the time.

Im not a big fan of metals in marine aquariums but copper will get rid of ich. http://www.ces.purdue.edu/extmedia/AS/AS-459.pdf

I would try something other than copper for ich on the tang. I've had it a couple times and never once did I use copper.

I have a fish dip that I treat fish, I don't like treating the whole tank but even a simple fresh water dip will help with ich if you can get the fish out.

If ya want to do something on a long term add a little finely crushed fresh garlic to the food.

Tang made it through!!!

Bad news is that the rest of the gang were paying the price. So, I brought the tang to my LFS where the guys are really nice and told them the scenario. They now have an awesome addition to their store and I have ZERO.

Tank is empty now just running the pump.

Question is;

Should I be using live rock from the start to help the cycle again and keep everything balanced? My first tank (reef tank) I used live sand and rock from the get go and it's doing great. Takes care of itself and water changes are very rare.

This fish only idea is stumping me......

Suggestions????

IMO yes, you want to add the live rock from the start and let the tank run for a month or so. Watch the nitrogen cycle run its course and after that slowly add live things.

Also, since you had ich in the tank - you will want to put off adding fish for at least 8-10 weeks - so in that time, you can add rock and sand, and help build up the good bacteria and stabilize your system

I hate waiting too, but I think you will have a better system in the long run.

GREAT advice tedio.........waiting does suck.......BUT it's perfect time for planning! .......research through the forum the livestock you want to add and even plan your rock formations outside of the tank.........these next 8-10 weeks could be fun afterall!
