Talking Our Garden eels video

Thought I would share. Yes, this is my first thread. lol

YouTube - Garden eels in home aquarium

They are the spotted (Hass) garden eels and the sandbed is approx. 8 inches.
All seem to be happy and fat and we have had them 6 months.
It is a 45 gal. flatback hex aquarium with 5 gal live rock and cheato sump.

When we got them they were about 7 inches long. I know they have grown since we got them, but they don't come all the way out of their holes, so it is hard to tell exactly how long they are now.

Those would definatly strtch out twice the size of what you see there, not counting what is in their tunel.

How long have you had them?

We have a few small feather dusters in there, a snake polyp and a chili coral too. All none agressive and low light requirements. We've had them for about 6 - 8 months now.

They come out off and on throughout the day, but they know when feeding time is and will come out and stare in my direction. They used to dart back into their holes when anyone came close to the tank, but they now make an exception for me. lol

they get along just fine with one another, just a bumped head now and then going after the same piece of food. We had seahorses in the tank with them (Kelloggi, yes our lesson)and they now have a green filefish neighbor. Just have to have peaceful cohabs in with them.

Fantastic video! I was going to ask if you ever see their butts, they really are "attached" to their holes aren't they? I first saw some of these a few years ago at the Vancouver Aquarium, just awesome little dudes

We've seen their tails when we first got them, interesting little drill spike on the end. They aren't really attached to the hole as they do move up and down in it quite a bit. They only have to come out of the hole about 5 inches in order to rid themselves of waste. Videos of any garden eels "swimming" means they aren't happy creatures and are looking to move.

Oh neat! It would be cool to see that drill spike, I'll have to google it.

LOL I didn't mean "attached" literally, I meant it as they just aren't interested in coming out too far, they really like those holes. They remind me of hermit crabs, they'll stretch out pretty far to get what they're after but nobody is ever seeing their butts

lol I gotcha. Yeah, they come out pretty far, but no butt viewing allowed.

The sand bed is approx 8 inches deep.
