Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'm hearing a lot about what the show Tanked is doing wrong in the way of pairing up tankmates and such. And I just thought about what can we reefers do? Well I just asked the "Tanked cast" nicely via their facebook page to maybe start a thread here and other forums, so maybe we can prevent new hobbyist from making huge mistakes from watching a show that doesn't cover the care of the inhabitants just "cool tanks".
If we reefers stick together, I would bet that the show would be more careful about the animals that are grouped together in tanks and possibly get them to refer newbies to places like this to educate themseleves before buying any marine life and just dumping it in a tank. If nothing else we can all e-mail, twitter, facebook or call to press the issue to keep this hobby at it's best and protect the animals that we all enjoy. The cast was at MACNA and read some emails during the dinner, so they must be reading them just a thought

I really dont think there is much we can do to change the show. This show is "reality TV" after all and i doubt the producers are worried about anything other then shock value and ratings. If they changed the format to include more details about the set ups or add educational clips i really think it would bore their viewer base.
I have heard a few second hand comments (so take them with a grain of salt) from the guys on the show and they say that its not their responsibility to educate on how to properly setup and maintain an aquarium, they say thats the job of LFS's. Ive also heard that they dont do the maintenance on these aquariums, that that is handed over to local maintenance companies. Again this is second hand stuff so they may or may not have said this. |

I disagree on the education part. When they have experts come in on Pawn Stars, it is very educational. That show is huge!. These guys should bite the bullet buid the tank, and let the people who maintain the tank stock it. Not disagreeing on why the produders do it Chris, I agree with you, what I mean is I disagree with the producers if that is their thought process. I dont watch the show anymore. That is my contribution. That is what makes me feel better. I watched every episode of Whale Wars, not because it was a riveting show, but because I wanted to help with their ratings.
