Here is a link to an interesting graphic that compares the worst oil spills based on several factors.

The graphic shows that while the current spill is not yet the biggest in terms of volume the environmental impact is likely to be the most significant. I personally believe the environmental impact of all spills is primarily measured by the impact on the shoreline while the marine environment, especially deep water, is not fully taken into account.

Just thought I would share this as I found it interesting. Hopefully they update this graphic years from now when the full impact is better understood.

I was reading some of the international news last night and they are all calling it the worst disaster in history.

If not currently I have no doubt that it will be very soon. I really hope that something is done to prevent such big distastes (very preventable) from happening in the future. Sadly I forsee more large oil discharges occurring going forward.

The graphic is outdated (June 3). The current spill is now at least 175 million gallons which puts it well past Ixtoc I. It's still not the all-time largest oil spill, but it's the largest or second largest marine oil spill (possibly behind the Gulf War oil spill).

You are absolutely correct!

With the situation on going the grpahic will be outdated as fast as it's updated. I think it gives a good visual as to the impact this spill will have (and is already having). Honestly I think it's pointless to update the grpahic until the flow is stopped then again a couple of years later.

Things just dont look to be getting any better there at all

News said they had film of BP burning sea turtles and dolphins alive.

They have documented BP paying contractors to burry oil on beaches with fesh sand instead fo cleaning it up, now the sand is eroding and oil os everywhere ,, they said the coast guard wont allow an one with in like 65 feet of the oil??

Said that will make it impossible for the rescue teams to recover sea birds and marine life!!

Billy Nungasser { sp } said too bad ,,,they are going to do it any way and try and stop them!

Something about endangerd spiecies act has more power then the coast guard on the actions taken over birds and turtles on the endangerd list??

Guess we will see.

I cant hardly watch the news any more!!

Ugh...

Sometimes it's just too overwhelming to think about all the negative environmental issues occurring. This is why as citizens we must do what we can, why as voters we must urge politicians to do their part, and why as consumers we must urge corporations to do their part.

Well said. Reminds me of a quote I use as a signature on another site...

"The ultimate test of man's conscience may be his willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard."
