There's probably a lot of important stuff that's not in the news.

The second one isn't in the news because it's a cleanup operation of a well that's been seeping since it was damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. They put containment domes over it and covered it with 100 ft of mud back then and now they're pumping the oil out of the domes while they work on sealing and abandoning the well. The company says that the sheen is either from oil seeping through the mud around the containment domes or from the Deepwater Horizon (though they obviously have in interest in saying they aren't spilling).
Between 2006-2009 there were 30 spills of crude oil larger than 2,100 gallons from rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, so it's hardly surprising that they found another rig with an oil sheen around it. Spills and accidents out there are a lot more common than people like to think, but they're almost never deemed newsworthy. In just the two years I was going to school on the coast, one rig from Louisiana broke loose and washed up ON our public beach (in Alabama) and we had to evacuate the island because a hydrogen sulfide leak on another rig a few miles off shore made people sick. Pictures of the beached rig made it on a couple of news reports, but the fact that we had to evacuate the island because of the gas leak was barely even covered in the local news! |

I just watched a show that showed BP from beginning to today on the spill. It did nothing but piss me off. There's been so much mismanagement of the entire process. They really need to roll some heads.

All oil companies are to blame; this spill should be a wake up call to America to end our dependence on a finite resource which is destroying our planet.

I don't know what to say. Everything I come up with to say about the situation winds up dripping with anger, which will accomplish nothing. So instead, I'm trying to focus on helpful responses.
- Volunteer to help with the spill response if you can, I think we have just seen the beginning of the impact, so opportunities to help will abound - Tell your congressman you want changes now (while this is fresh in everyone's minds) to reduce our dependence on oil. - Start changing your habits now to reduce consumption of oil, gas, plastic. |

I think the blame falls on the entire industry. No one can honestly tell me that one or two companies are the only ones that aren't following all the safety guidelines or fully prepared in case of an emergency like this.
I watched persons from BP admit on TV that they were not prepared nor had any idea on what to really do with a leak this far down. You're right about the other Corps being at fault also, but please include the also. I know you work for them and can't say to much, but don't pass the buck. they are just as responsible as the next guy. If there's not a way to fix a problem if one is created then why do they allow them to drill so far down? I don't mind drilling for oil or having to use carbon products, but have a safety net.

no, we are experiencing greed in its worst form, BP has a rap sheet of offenses for very similar offenses of neglect, an $80 million fine is peanuts compared to doing it right. saw on the news today an oyster company in new Orleans, 125 yrs old is shutting down because their fields are now shut, I truly pity the locals down there, the lives they knew are done and worse, we ain't seen nothing yet

I watched the same show. It's sad to think that they are having to close the doors because of greed and trying to bypass the system.

=================== I agree , just think,,,They BP is the only one with this technology, and how many others are drilling there??, only trouble was ,,even they they didnt actualy have the technology , they are flying by the seat of their britches. The evidence is obvious. ----------------------------- I truly pity the locals down there, the lives they knew are done and worse, we ain't seen nothing yet ------------------------------ I would say you are right. The news said there is a ,,,,just one so far ,,,streak of oil 20 miles long and a mile thick that was recorded by NOOA headed north east,, that means the coast line,,. I think because they are allowed write their own regs also allows them to be lazy ,,this is the reason they get away with it , . I also find it tough to believe that USA doesnt have military capabilities to react to such a issue.. What if this was a attack on or against ANY country any where in the world, something like this has efects that will last for centuries. Here is something else to consider, IMO, The coast Guard should not be in charge of this OIL when and after it reaches shore, they are our water enforcment agency . The EPA should be in charge of the oil when it reaches the beach, after it hits the marsh then the DPT of fish and game should be in charge, If they can be in charge of exaust emissions from idling trucks then whay are they not in charge of oil from this ? That is three agencies that should be bringing suit against BP. In NYC you can get a ticket from a game warden for staying warm in a idling semi truck while you sleep , Just goes to show ya the coruption involved around big money. They cant police them selves and yet they want to police the world. Its Bull Butter. |
