Make the drain/overflow about 30% larger in diameter than the return holes. This will make your pump happier and reduce the chance of overflow. The size of those holes really depends on the flow you want, are you doing a high flow stony coral tank or a low flow soft coral/fish tank?

As for quiet external pumps, I have yet to encounter one. Submersible are by far the quietest types, but if you want an external pump, you can reduce noise by sound proofing it's containment area and resting the pump on soft foam or suspending it, which will elliminate the vibration which accounts for maybe 1/4 to 1/2 the noise depending on the pump.

I use 1" bulkheads which take 1.75" holes if I remember right. one the pump...they aren't quiet.

The quietest pumps are submersible IMO.

If you make the return section of your sump big enough you can suspend both the return and closed loop pumps in there. I think that would be the quietest.

The Quiet One Pump. Excellent internal or external pump.
And 1" Bulk heads would be best.

Your going to want to figure out how much flow you want first then pick bulkheads that will handle that amount of flow.
