sump and overflow questions

Hey everyone I just had some general questions for adding a sump to my tank system. I am looking into getting an overflow much like the ones that eshopps make they seem to have solid reviews(links at bottom). My question is what gph should I be looking for in the overflow and the return pump. Does the ten times the amount of water rule apply here as it does for circulation purposes? Should I just find a setup that has the overflow syphoning x gph and then find a return pump that will bring the same amount of gph back to the tank? My tank is only around 33 gallons so should I avoid high gph numbers so that the flow is not too strong I am unsure what ballpark numbers I should be looking for. Any and all comments and suggestions are appreciated.
overflow varieties: Reef Aquarium Filtration: Eshopps Overflow Boxes example pump: Aquarium Circulation and Water Pumps: Marineland Maxi-Jet Utility Pumps

Personally I like a slow flow through the sump. You don't want a faster return that what your protein skimmer can handle for one thing. You wanna give any equipment in your sump a chance to work. Heater, and gfo, and of course the skimmer.
You "can" count the return as turnover in your tank just don't forget to compensate for height. Are you planning on a fuge or uv sterilizer? Those are more reasons for slower flow... |

As long as the return pump will pump less back to the tank then the overflow will drain you are OK.
I agree with Tizzo, slower is better, but you want it fast enough the stuff gets washed down to the sump where it gets removed from your system. |

Im using two of the overflows that donkey did. I love them. They restart without any help and everything. I have had zero problems with them.

Hey everyone thank you for the info and quick responses much apreciated.
Donkey that video was awesome definately thinking of going DIY for the overflow now. The sump I was looking into getting: Aqueon » Aqueon ProFlex? Modular Sump Filtration | Products I would get model 1 because it fits in the stand I have for my rsm130 and has what I need the large center chamber would be a fuge with sand/LR and some macro algae. It seems the consensus is slower flow through the sump with similar but greater flow returning to the tank. I will look into some return pumps and try to figure out what a good basis would be. Thank you everyone again for the info and suggestions!!! ![]()

--You get the logic right?? Cause if you put it in faster than it can drain, then your tank will overflow! Anyway, Maxijet is a good choice, It's reliable, cheap and small... If I remember correctly, they don't put out to much heat. |
