Default Turkey baster poll

I am wondering who else uses a turkey baster to go in throughout the rock work in their tank and blow out the detritus? Anyone feel that it is unneeded?

If so please add how often you do this.

I voted yes, I try and do it about once a month but I am going to start doing it right before every water change.

is good doing it before the water change so you can suck all that detritus . I also use one very often.

Yea so hopefully some makes it to your skimmer and a bunch of it will settle on the sand so you can siphon it out.

"remove" sounds like you suck the scum up. isn't it more like blowing the scum around??

It is impossible to get it all but you can try. I also sometimes take a Maxi Jet 1200 I have and blow the rocks off.

I use the baster once a week and once a month I use a small powerhead to keep the stuff suspended so the overflow and the skimmer can pick up more

I use the Tukeybaster for many things feeding, moving polyps, sucking detritus, blowing rocks off. I think it is one ofthe best tools around and cheap to replace.

Whats up?
Default

i voted for once in a great while. i set up the secondary return outlet to blow out from inside my rockwork so that not much collects there. last time i cleaned between the rocks i really didnt get much detritus to blow around. maybe its cause my tanks still young, but i hope to keep it that way.

I use mine quite a bit. Probably once a month to blow stuff into suspension and a couple times a week to feed my LPS.

I see mine close up and then blow out if they get to much junk in them. I'm sure they have to do the same thing in the wild when the water gets rough

That's a good sign your skimmer is working properly. Your foam head should receed after you've had your hands in the tank for a little while.

I do use a turkey baster too, feeding and blowing off the rocks. I don't siphon out what I blow off though, I let it go, and some of it goes over the overflow, but I do keep softies, so it's a good food source for them.
