Is there any way you can get another photo of it from a bit further back so we can see the growth form?

It looks like an acropora tenuis to me. I used to have one. I did find a pic, but it's polyps would sometimes extend even further... Anyway, if you need a bigger pic, I have to email it to you since I think this sight limits the size...

It's definitely not A. tenuis. A. tenuis has more "scalloped" polyps, less rounded or bulbous than appears in your photos. The structure is more similar to A. tortuosa, but torts rarely put out such polyp extension. Possibly A. horrida.
It's going to have to grow a bit more, to show a growth pattern, before a positive ID can be made. In the meantime, check out this website, to help you determine ID. Species

Identifying species of acropora via pictures on the internet is a fun pastime, but it's not scientific.
There are too many species with similar characteristics that can only be determined once a specimen is bleached and measured. Even then, using a reference like the Veron books, you still can get differing opinions- by coral biologists. (Some of the characteristics overlap- a. somecoral has coralites that are 5-7 mm apart on average, a. anothercoral has coralites that are 6-8 mm apart on average. Also the same coral can grow differently under different conditions.) Of course the first question that helps to determine species is one we can rarely answer- where did it come from? Which of the 141 ecoregions does it originate from? Don't know? Then you're left with a roulette wheel of 3-4 different species. I really wish I hadn't loaned out my copy of the AIMS CD- they stopped producing it and haven't finished the new version yet. Corals of the World - Coral ID |
