Doesn't the color have something to do w/ reflecting light to or away from the zoox, depending on where the coral is in relation to the light it needs. I read that if their getting to much light the color will deepen to reflect away, and if not enough the color will lighten to give the algae better light?

I think the role of coral pigments is largely unknown. There is lots of speculation, but nothing solid. Again, why do nonphotosynthetic corals living in caves have bright colors while some other photosynthetic corals in bright light are a muted brown?
