Default Pumps and Anemones

I am wondering how long do most of you with anemones leave your pumps covered? Do you wait 1-2 months to make sure your nem is styaing put or do you just leave them covered all the time?

I ask because the covers really do cut down on the flow and they get rather dirty quickly. I am hoping if my nem stays put I can remove the covers.

nems are weird - they wont move for months, and then go walkabout one day... I'd keep them covered all the time, but maybe cover them with plastic canvas so you don't interrupt your flow as much as you with with the pre-filter foam covers that come with most pumps

Okay maybe I need to check into doing that. Where do you purchase something like that? Do you have a photo?

I recommend having them covered always. After having mine for 4 months in one place it decided to just let go and floated right into the powerhead. you just never know when they will decide to move and one time it wont get hurt at all but I wouldnt take the chance.

I dont have any that are covered anymore because I nolonger have the anemone. When I did conver the Koralia's I cut doughnut shapes from sponges out a nano cube that went over the screen of the powerhead. It did cut down the flow some but well worth it.

That's just how I had my koralia for my anemone which I miss very much. I should get another one.

This is probably safest, but they sure do cut down on flow and collect detrus.

I am thinking this is what I will do once I am more confident that this new nem is staying put. It hasn't looked like it wants to move yet.

yes, they need cleaned out every other day and they do cut down on flow quite a bit.

What happens when the anemone decides to just let go in the middle of the night and is sucked in before you ever knew anything happened. That is what happened to me and the reason I will never have an uncovered powerhead with an anemone again. Just my personal preference and I do urge others to do the same.

I won't dissagree with you because you are probably right. So mine are covered at least for now.

The funny thing about that is with them covered the nem may like the amount of flow, then you uncover them and the flow increases and the nem doesn't like that much flow and that is when it decides to go for a walk or worse yet a current ride.

sorry for the delay - plastic canvas can be found at pretty much every craft store - even walmart Its cheap, easy, and flexible so you can just wrap it around your pumps and tie it together with fishing line - voila!!!

Sorry I dont have any pics of it in use - haha maybe I should bother to make something for a fun weekend craft project

I actually have a circulation pump with it in use on my seahorese thread. It is used inside the pump but does the same thing without adding to its size. I do have a little more work to do to clean it then but it works better and looks nicer than having a sponge wrapped around it.

Curious guys, with your pumps and how the nem has based itself.. Is the nem in a sheltered area, or in full flow ????

I agree, not much you can do when that happens
